School performance no proof of talent

7 August 2023

That an 8 on your report card does not guarantee success may be well known, but that does not explain it. How come? Why is it that excellent school performance is no guarantee of a career that shoots into space like a rocket?

As a Havist who could only hoist the flag with bag after seven years (!), I make an attempt to explain this phenomenon.

For that, I always like to make the comparison with a girl performing her skills on the horizontal bar. Before she can make a complete turn on her axis, she must first have pulled herself up to hip height. Otherwise, the turn will never, ever happen. Without muscle power, no success.

Can you picture it?

Well, so it is with the adult human being. Before anything else, problem-solving skills need to reach the desired level before we can use what we have learned to serve our audience. In that order, otherwise it doesn't work. Behaviour first, then function.

Darwin said.

Limits to careers are determined not by knowledge but by problem-solving ability. So stop training for heights that are far from being reached.

What do you think, how high can your rack be put?
